Chelsea wait for results of Lampard scan

Chelsea expect to discover the extent of Frank Lampard’s calf problem on Thursday.

He was in significant pain as he limped out of Tuesday night’s 2-1 Champions League defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk after only 17 minutes.

And manager Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed the midfielder, 34, suffered a recurrence of the injury he picked up against Norwich, which ruled him out of England’s recent World Cup qualifiers.

Lampard, who looks certain to miss Sunday’s Premier League game against Manchester United, was due to undergo a scan on Wednesday with the results anticipated the following day.

The vice-captain’s absence would be a big blow for the Blues, especially given skipper John Terry’s domestic ban.

“Frank was training with us fine and there were no alarm bells before the game. He was in good condition to play,” Di Matteo said.
