Hazard gives Chelsea a deserved victory

Chelsea were again guilty of missing chances, but a single goal was enough to give them a deserved victory.

It was scored by the outstanding Eden Hazard, who fired home just before the half-hour mark.

The Belgian cut in from the left, breezed past Angel Rangel and let fly with a shot which went through keeper Gerhard Tremmel, who was unsighted by Ashley Williams’ hapless attempt to head clear.

Williams had earlier produced a timely clearance to prevent Samuel Eto’o tapping into an unguarded net after John Terry had met Juan Mata’s cross at the far post.

Chelsea deserved their lead but then needed Petr Cech to tip over a close-range effort from Alvaro Vasquez, who should have equalised.

Eto’o should have doubled the home side’s advantage before the break but saw his shot pushed away by Tremmel after being put through by Mata.

And the former Barcelona star had another opportunity only 14 seconds after the interval.

Again Mata was the provider, serving up a great ball in from the right only for Tremmel to deny Eto’o with a point-blank save.

Tremmel also kept out a low shot from substitute Frank Lampard as Chelsea continued to dominate.

Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Cech; Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Cole; Ramires, Mikel; Mata (Schurrle 71), Oscar (Lampard 67), Hazard (Willian 82); Eto’o.
Subs not used: Schwarzer, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Torres.
