Chelsea had been on top, with Tammy Abraham heading one Willian corner against the bar and another just over.

Earlier, the fit-again Hudson-Odoi created two first-half chances, crossing for Willian, who headed wide, and then setting up Mason Mount, whose effort was pushed away by keeper Martin Dubravka.

The victory was Chelsea’s third in a row in the league although, on a less positive note for them, Ross Barkley went off shortly before half-time with an ankle problem.

Chelsea: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Tomori, Zouma, Alonso, Jorginho, Mount (Pulisic 64), Barkley (Kovacic 44), Willian, Hudson-Odoi (James 90), Abraham.
Subs not used: Caballero, Giroud, Batshuayi, Guehi.
