Alonso’s goal gives Chelsea another win

Chelsea 1 Newcastle 0

Marcos Alonso’s 73rd-minute winner lifted Chelsea to third in the Premier League.

The outstanding Callum Hudson-Odoi was found by Christian Pulisic and teed up Alonso, who fired home.

Chelsea had been on top, with Tammy Abraham heading one Willian corner against the bar and another just over.

Earlier, the fit-again Hudson-Odoi created two first-half chances, crossing for Willian, who headed wide, and then setting up Mason Mount, whose effort was pushed away by keeper Martin Dubravka.

The victory was Chelsea’s third in a row in the league although, on a less positive note for them, Ross Barkley went off shortly before half-time with an ankle problem.

Chelsea: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Tomori, Zouma, Alonso, Jorginho, Mount (Pulisic 64), Barkley (Kovacic 44), Willian, Hudson-Odoi (James 90), Abraham.
Subs not used: Caballero, Giroud, Batshuayi, Guehi.
