Hazard returns – and settles Chelsea friendly

Eden Hazard returned to action for Chelsea as they rounded off their pre-season campaign by beating Lyon on penalties.

Hazard, back after his post-World Cup break, scored the winning penalty in the shootout.

Like their previous two games, Chelsea’s final match of the International Champions Cup was settled by spot-kicks, this time after a 0-0 draw.

Jorginho, Ross Barkley, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta all scored for Chelsea before Rob Green saved Pape Cheikh Diop’s kick and Hazard tucked his away.

The Belgian had come on as a substitute at Stamford Bridge, where Maurizio Sarri took charge of his first home match as Blues boss and new signing Jorginho made his home debut.

Hazard, who has been linked with Real Madrid amid much speculation over his future, was given a hero’s reception by Chelsea fans when brought on in the second half.

Green made his first Chelsea appearance since the veteran was brought in as a back-up keeper.

Former QPR man Green came on as a late substitute for youngster Marcin Bulka, who impressed.

Bulka kept out a first-half effort from Memphis Depay and denied the Dutchman again early in the second half after Tiemoue Bakayoko had given the ball away.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek went close for Chelsea when he dinked a shot over keeper Anthony Lopes and against the post after being through on goal.

Chelsea, who are in talks to sign keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao and to potentially offload Tiemoue Bakayoko to AC Milan, will start their Premier League season with an away match against Huddersfield on Saturday.

Chelsea: Bulka (Green 74), Zappacosta (Azpilicueta 74), Christensen (Cahill 74), Ampadu (Rudiger 74), Emerson (Alonso 74), Loftus-Cheek (Kante 60), Bakayoko (Jorginho 60), Drinkwater (Barkley 60), Moses (Piazon 68), Abraham (Giroud 68), Willian (Hazard 68).
