Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has signed a new four-year contract, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2019.

The England centre-back has agreed terms on the deal just a couple of weeks before he turns 30, when he was likely to only have been offered a 12-month contract in line with club procedure.

Cahill has made 177 appearances for the Blues since arriving from Bolton in January 2012.

He has won the Champions League, Europa League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup in his first four years at Chelsea, and has been named in the PFA Team of the Year in the past two seasons.

Cahill told Chelsea’s official website: “I’m really pleased to commit my future to Chelsea and it’s great the club has put their faith in me.

“I have achieved a lot here and I hope I can keep on learning, helping the team and lifting trophies over the next four years.”

The former Aston Villa defender was named England vice-captain following the 2014 World Cup and has 40 caps.
