Chelsea slump to defeat at Man City

Manchester City 2 Chelsea 0

Chelsea’s hopes of a top-two finish were dealt a major blow at the Etihad Stadium, where Joe Hart’s penalty save from Frank Lampard proved to be crucial.

It was also controversial, given that the Manchester City goalkeeper stayed on the pitch despite bringing down Demba Ba as the striker bore down on goal five minutes into the second half.

Yaya Toure then broke the deadlock and Carlos Tevez netted late on.

Hart, who was not even booked for his challenge on Ba, dived to his right to keep out Lampard’s spot-kick – denying the midfielder his 200th Chelsea goal.

Worse followed for the visitors just past the hour mark, when Toure breezed past Lampard and John Obi Mikel and superbly steered the ball beyond Petr Cech to put City ahead.

City sealed their victory five minutes from time, Tevez shooting home after being set up by David Silva.

Chelsea will feel aggrieved, although the reigning champions had dominated the game prior to the penalty, with Cech producing first-half saves from Matija Nastasic and Jack Rodwell.

Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Luiz, Cahill, Cole, Mikel (Torres 81), Lampard (Oscar 68), Ramires, Hazard (Moses 68), Mata, Ba.
Subs not used: Turnbull, Terry, Azpilicueta, Bertrand.
