Wales remain convinced Ethan Ampadu will commit his long-term international future to them rather than choose to play for England.

The Chelsea youngster, who was signed from Exeter City during the summer, is regarded as one of the country’s brightest prospects.

Ampadu made his senior Wales debut against France in a friendly on Friday but remains eligible for England until he plays for Wales in a competitive fixture.

He was born in Exeter but is eligible to play for Wales because his mother is from there.

The Football Association of Wales’ technical director Osian Roberts has insisted that Ampadu and Sheffield United’s highly-rated youngster David Brooks have no intention of changing their allegiances.

“They are Welsh players, simple as,” Roberts told the Daily Telegraph. “No story there. They are Welsh players. End of.

“We have got some younger-generation players who have been with us for a while now behind the scenes in the camps.

“They have trained well and the next logical step for them is to take that into the (senior international) field.”
