Chelsea lose on penalties to Liverpool in Carabao Cup
Chelsea were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after losing 6-5 on penalties to Liverpool at Anfield, where the fourth-round tie finished 1-1.
Morgan Rogers put the Blues ahead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute after Moises Caicedo was brought down by Ryan Gravenberch, but Cody Gakpo equalised with a penalty three minutes later after Wesley Fofana handled.
Fofana then missed the decisive kick in sudden death, sending his effort over the bar after Joe Gomez had scored for Liverpool.
Valentin Barco hit the post and Emmanuel Emegha, making his Chelsea debut as a second-half substitute, had his kick saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Mike Penders, who made a costly error in Saturday’s defeat by Tottenham, saved Gravenberch’s penalty in the shootout after earlier keeping out efforts from Gakpo, Ronald Araujo and Bradley Barcola.
Marco Palestra came close to winning it for Chelsea late on but was denied by a fine save from Mamardashvili.
Chelsea, who lost Maxence Lacroix to injury, host Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.
