Chilwell and James likely to miss Arsenal game

Ben Chilwell looks likely to miss Chelsea’s game at Arsenal on Boxing Day.

The England left-back went off after 10 minutes against West Ham on Monday after suffering a twisted ankle.

His condition is being monitored but he is not expected to be involved against the Gunners, leaving Chelsea – who play Aston Villa 48 hours later – without both their first-choice full-backs.

Reece James has been struggling with a knee problem and could require surgery.

Nevertheless, boss Frank Lampard says he is hopeful both players will be available sooner rather than later.

“I expect he (Chilwell) will be doubtful for Arsenal,” Lampard said.

“He turned his ankle and tried to carry on but it was too painful, so we’ll have a scan or whatever and try to see how bad he is.

“Reece and Chilly have been doing really well so we hope both their injuries are not too bad and they’ll be in and around those two games over Christmas.’
