Chelsea draw with Everton as City go top of WSL
Lucy Bronze’s own goal cost Chelsea victory as Everton held them to a draw at Stamford Bridge, allowing Manchester City to replace them at the top of the Women’s Super League.
Sandy Baltimore had given Sonia Bompastor’s side the lead on 28 minutes, tapping in after Bronze headed a well-worked corner routine across goal.
But five minutes later Bronze, making her 150th WSL appearance, failed to deal with a cross from Everton’s Yuka Momiki and sent an awkward attempted clearance beyond goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.
Chelsea had dominated the first half. Ellie Carpenter hit the side-netting and set up several chances from the right, and Everton defender Hannah Blundell cleared Wieke Kaptein’s effort off the line.
Everton should have gone ahead early in the second half, when an unmarked header from close range went badly off target.
Bompastor made changes in search of a winner, sending on Aggie Beever-Jones to play alongside Melvine Malard in attack with 16 minutes left, but Everton held firm.
Chelsea had seven shots on target and 12 corners, but could not find a way past Courtney Brosnan for a second time.
Manchester City’s 5-0 win over West Ham means they are now two points clear of Chelsea.
