Boss Mourinho hails Chelsea star Cahill

Chelsea and England defender Gary Cahill is in the best form of his career, according to Jose Mourinho.

The Blues manager has put his faith in the 28-year-old as part of Chelsea’s first-choice centre-back pairing alongside captain John Terry.

And Cahill’s club form has helped him become an international regular – and last week saw him earn the honour of being named England’s vice-captain.

“I think he is a mature player and in the best moment of his career,” Mourinho said.

“His age and experience with club and national team, his profile as a professional and a player is always very stable.

Mourinho has seen his team make a fine start to the season

“For England he is a central defender they obviously trust and, as vice-captain, they know when he has the armband he will always behave in the proper way.”

Cahill joined the Blues from Bolton for £7m in January 2012 and has scored 10 goals in 114 games and helped the club win the Champions League and Europa League.

He has been in fine form so far this season and played a key role in his team’s excellent start to the campaign.

So too have the new signings Mourinho – and the bookmakers – believe have turned Chelsea into strong title contenders.

“We think we did well with our business,” Mourinho said.

“I did well by analysing the situation at an early stage and my club did an amazing job in giving the team the players we think are the right ones.”
