Cech’s future unaffected by new Courtois contract, Mourinho insists

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insists Petr Cech’s Blues future will not be affected by Thibaut Courtois signing a new five-year contract.

The Belgian, 22, returned to Stamford Bridge at the start of the season after impressing while on loan at Atletico Madrid and has replaced the long-serving Cech as Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper.

Cech, 32, had been tipped to leave during the transfer window, but Mourinho said: “I don’t think there is a problem.

“Petr is a very intelligent guy and knows when Courtois is coming back it is to sign a new contract and stay for a long time.

“Nobody would expect Courtois to come back and in two years’ time be a free agent and Chelsea to be in trouble with that. What happened was very much on the table.

“It was something everybody could expect. The five-year contract gives us stability. Petr is a top goalkeeper and I am more than happy to have both.”
