Chelsea confirm Terry will keep captaincy

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has confirmed that John Terry will retain the captaincy in the wake of his four-game ban for using racist language towards QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

Terry was cleared in court of racially abusing Ferdinand during last year’s west London derby, but the defender was subsequently suspended and fined following a hearing by an independent FA panel.

Buck told talkSPORT that Terry has received a “very heavy fine” but would stay on as skipper.

He explained that it was club procedure not to reveal details of the fine imposed.

“We want to move on from this and draw a line under it but we will remember it,” said Buck.

Blues chief executive Ron Gourlay added: “The club does not believe for one minute that John Terry is a racist.

“We know that not everyone will agree with our decision and we respect this. We know it [what Terry said] was unacceptable and the club and player are disappointed.”
