Chelsea boss explains Terry’s absence

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said skipper John Terry was rested for the 3-0 win over Newcastle purely as a precaution and should return against West Brom on Tuesday.

Terry has been nursing a slight muscle problem and his absence against the Magpies meant he missed a Premier League match for the first time this season.

But Mourinho explained: “It’s not an injury – it’s almost an injury. It’s something when two muscles come together.

“We had a decision to make and were aware that Newcastle also had some problems – bigger problems than us because they lost some of their most important players.

“We decided not to risk it and to protect him. Normally he is ready for Tuesday.”

Fernando Torres could also return to action in next week’s game at The Hawthorns.

Torres has been out with a knee problem but Mourinho expects the striker to be available for the West Brom match or next Saturday’s FA Cup clash at Manchester City.
