Chelsea snap up highly-rated Exeter youngster

Chelsea have signed highly-rated teenager Ethan Ampadu from Exeter City.

The 16-year-old midfielder, who made 13 first-team appearances for Exeter last season, has agreed a contract with the Blues after being courted by several clubs.

Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham all showed a strong interest in Ampadu, who made his league debut at the age of 15.

Chelsea are in discussions over a fee with Exeter, who will be entitled to compensation if the two clubs do not reach an agreement. That figure would be set by a tribunal.

Amapdu’s age means he did not have professional contract and was free to speak to other clubs, but as he is under 24 and a product of Exeter’s youth system the League Two club are due a compensation payment.
