Chelsea await news on Rudiger injury

Chelsea are anxiously awaiting injury news on Antonio Rudiger after the German defender was replaced at half-time in the 5-2 victory over Wolves.

Rudiger was making his first start since April for the Blues following a knee injury and only managed to last 45 minutes playing in a back three on his long-awaited comeback.

The 26-year-old looked an assured figure on his first start of the season but his day finished earlier than anticipated.

Boss Frank Lampard said the centre-back slipped and tweaked his groin when leaving the field at the interval.

“Rudiger has a groin issue,” Lampard confirmed. “As he came off the pitch near me, he slipped on the metal. Hopefully it’s not too bad.”

“It was more than a precaution because he did feel some pain. Hopefully it’s a quick turnaround.”

The injury to the big centre-back put a slight blemish on what was an otherwise fantastic away victory.

Chelsea and Lampard must now wait to see if Rudiger will be fit in time for their opening Champions League fixture against Valencia at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
