Frank Lampard said he felt Chelsea matched Manchester City for large spells of the game despite their 2-1 defeat.

N’Golo Kante put the visitors ahead but Kevin De Bruyne equalised with a deflected effort before Riyad Mahrez scored what turned out to be the winner.

Chelsea boss Lampard said: “I wanted to come here and be brave – to compete, be brave on the ball and brave off the ball.

“I thought in the first half you saw all of that. At 1-0 we had relative control of the game.

“I don’t think you could come away from that game and say anything other than that there were two really strong teams going against each other.

“One wins it because of a deflected goal and then a real moment of quality from Mahrez. The rest was pretty much in the balance.”
