Blues agree fee for Basel star Salah

Chelsea look set to pip Liverpool to the signing of FC Basel winger Mohamed Salah.

The Blues have agreed a fee with the Swiss club for the highly-rated 21-year-old, who scored in both group stage matches against Chelsea in the Uefa Champions League this season.

He will now discuss personal terms and undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge before becoming Jose Mourinho’s second signing of the January transfer window after Nemanja Matic.

Liverpool have long been linked with Salah, with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers earlier on Thursday calling the Egyptian ‘a talented player’.

But Chelsea have struck a deal first and will hope to complete the formalities before the FA Cup clash with Stoke City on Sunday.

Salah, who was the joint leading scorer in the African section of World Cup qualifying, first came to prominence in last season’s Europa League when he helped Basel reach the semi-finals against Chelsea.

He scored in the second leg at Stamford Bridge and then also scored against the Blues home and away in the Champions League this term.
