Benitez refuses to discuss Lampard’s future after derby victory

Rafael Benitez again refused to comment on the issue of Frank Lampard’s future following Chelsea’s victory against Arsenal.

Lampard netted from the penalty spot – his 195th goal for the Blues – to help them to a 2-1 win.

It underlined the continued importance to Chelsea of their midfield stalwart, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Asked if he understood supporters’ frustration at the club’s apparent reluctance to offer Lampard a new deal, Benitez was non-committal.

“I have said before that he is doing well in training and in matches,” said the interim manager.

“I don’t think you have to push me every time to talk about it when you know it’s not my decision.”

Coming after Chelsea’s surrendering of a two-goal lead at home to Southampton, not to mention recent wins at Stamford Bridge for Swansea and QPR, the derby triumph was a huge boost.

It also cemented their position in third place and was a major blow for rivals Arsenal, whose disappointing season continues.

Benitez said: “I’m happy because I think we were creating a lot of chances at home but not winning.

“For this game we had a lot of chances in the first half and even in the second half when they were pushing and pushing we could have scored a third goal.

“We deserved to win. We played very well in the first half and defended well in the second.

“Every game you win and show quality and character does something positive for your confidence.”
