Benitez considers move to sign Essien

Rafael Benitez is considering a move to sign Michael Essien for Napoli.

Essien, whose Chelsea contract expires at the end of the season, will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge this month if a club comes in for him. So far there have been no offers.

The 31-year-old’s representatives have talked up the possibility of him joining AC Milan, but the San Siro outfit have not made an approach and Benitez has now been offered the chance to take him to Naples.

Essien did not play for Benitez during his eventful spell as interim boss at Chelsea last season as he spent the campaign on loan at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho.

Signed from Lyon in 2005, Ghana international Essien was a key player during Mourinho’s first spell as Blues boss.

But he has made only two Premier League starts since the Portuguese’s return and has been pushed further down the pecking order of midfielders by the signing of Nemanja Matic from Benfica.
