Lampard praises players after Super Cup loss

Frank Lampard took plenty of positives from Chelsea’s Super Cup game against Liverpool despite his team losing on penalties.

Liverpool prevailed in the shootout after an entertaining 2-2 draw in Istanbul, where the fit-again N’Golo Kante returned to the starting line-up.

Kante was outstanding, while new arrival Christian Pulisic produced a hugely encouraging performance.

Blues boss Lampard described Kante and an “amazing player and amazing character” and also praised Emerson and Jorginho for their displays.

The contribution of Pulisic in his first start for the club was a definite plus for new Blues boss Lampard.

“I’m really happy with him and there’s lots more to come. All the signs are good for what he can be for the club,” Lampard said.

“You have to remember his age; he’s 20 has come into our league and into this game against Liverpool – one of the most intense teams to play against.

“It took him a bit of time to get his feeling but once he did you could see his confidence in carrying the ball and things he can create.”

Just as they did at Manchester United in their opening Premier League match, Chelsea were on top for large spells of the game.

There were good signs in that game despite the result – and again Lampard’s side showed some real promise.

“I think there were some signs against Man United but you can’t talk about them too much when you lose 4-0,” Lampard said.

“But today was different; it was clear that it was a really good performance against a team that have been building for years.

“I saw a work ethic and a desire to run in behind teams and hurt them with our play I thought was great.”
