Alonso sees improvement despite Chelsea cup exit

Xabi Alonso saw signs of improvement from Chelsea despite their Carabao Cup exit at Anfield – and described the competition as probably the club’s least important this season.

The Blues were knocked out on penalties by Liverpool after a 1-1 draw, with Wesley Fofana missing the decisive kick in sudden death.

And the Chelsea boss said: “For sure the outcome is not what we wanted or what we expected before the game. Once you reach penalties there is going to be a sad side, and in this case it is us.

“But I have to say that we played at a very good, competitive level. It was a good performance. We showed an improvement, which is what we wanted, and we played with courage.

“The game was really close, with not many chances for either side, and we had to overcome difficult moments as well after the injury, when we had to change a few things.

“It’s a small setback, in what is probably the least important competition for us this year. So we need to move on, and as soon as we leave Anfield our focus is Saturday’s Premier League game. That is the main and most important thing.”

Mike Penders, who punched a corner into his own net in Saturday’s defeat by Tottenham, made several important saves and also stopped a penalty in the shootout.

“He looked really solid, with good composure,” Alonso said. “He dealt well with Saturday. This is what it takes in this job – to overcome difficult situations – and he did quite well.”

Maxence Lacroix went off injured in the first half, and Alonso said: “It’s too early to tell. He probably felt something in his hamstring and we need a couple of days to check what the injury is.”

Estevao, whose name was sung by the travelling fans, was left on the bench throughout.

“I understand his situation, and that he could be happier, for sure,” Alonso said. “Every player wants to play and wants to be part of the team.

“We have had some intense games and there will be moments for everyone. I’m sure Estevao will have his moment. It’s my responsibility and we need to deal with that.”
