Chelsea Ladies are worthy champions – Hayes

Chelsea Ladies manager Emma Hayes

Chelsea Ladies manager Emma Hayes said her side were worthy champions after sealing their first league title.

The Blues coasted to a 4-0 victory over Sunderland Ladies to complete the league and Women’s FA Cup double, with Ji So Yun grabbing the opener, and Gemma Davison sealing the win after a double from Fran Kirby.

Hayes, whose side missed out on the title in agonising circumstances on the final day of last season, said: “I’m just so happy for everyone involved with the football club, because everybody puts a big effort in.

“Everyone has contributed to this success and we deserve to be champions. I felt in control the whole season. We have felt calm and relaxed and we have enjoyed leading from the front and our performances have shown that.

Fran Kirby scored twice for Chelsea in a resounding win

“The girls wanted to put in a performance in front of a record crowd tonight and they dominated from start to finish. I knew tonight would be our night.”

Two-goal striker Kirby added: “It’s pretty incredible and you can see how much it means to all the girls.

“There was a bit of of nerves coming in to the match which you would expect.

“But we dominated from start to finish and could have had more goals. It was a great team performance.”
