Chelsea suffer extra-time defeat in semi-final

Chelsea were denied a place in the Women’s FA Cup final after a late Manchester City comeback saw Sonia Bompastor’s side fall to a 3-2 defeat after extra time at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues appeared to be cruising toward a fourth final in five seasons after goals from Erin Cuthbert and Sam Kerr established a 2-0 lead with just minutes of normal time remaining.

However, Mary Fowler pulled one back for the WSL champions in the 86th minute before Khadija Shaw – who has been heavily linked with a summer move to Chelsea – struck a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to force the game into an extra 30 minutes.

Shaw then completed the turnaround in the 103rd minute, heading home to end Chelsea’s hopes of defending their domestic title.

The Blues were frustrated by several key decisions throughout the afternoon, including a first-half strike from Kerr that was ruled out after the ball was deemed to have gone out of play in the build-up.

Chelsea also had a late appeal for a penalty turned down in extra time after a challenge on Aggie Beever-Jones by City goalkeeper Khiara Keating was waved away by the officials.

Despite the late pressure, which saw Keating tip a Sjoeke Nusken header onto the crossbar, the Blues could not find a way back into the tie.
