Inspirational captain Katie Chapman scored her third goal in two games as Chelsea Ladies beat Reading Women 3-0 to stay in the hunt for the Women’s Super League title and strengthen their chances of securing European football next season.

Chapman’s header from Karen Carney’s cross set the Blues on the way at Adams Park and injury-time strikes from Gemma Davison and Ana Borges sealed a deserved win.

And although Manchester City’s win 1-0 win over third-placed Arsenal means Chelsea remain seven points behind leaders City, the Blues are now eight points clear of Arsenal.

Chelsea also still have a game in hand on City and face the leaders in their next fixture.

The victory over Reading could easily been sealed in the first half with Davison, Carney and Eni Aluko all dangerous.

Claire Rafferty went close with a decent strike and Chapman twice almost scored with headers.

But Chapman did find the net with a header after the interval and a fine solo strike and Borges’ calm finish ensured victory.
