Chelsea Ladies proved grit – Hayes

Chelsea Ladies boss Emma Hayes says her side proved they have the mental strength to match their ability after the impressive victory over Notts County Ladies.

The Blues earned a deserved 2-1 win in the opening game of their Women’s Super League season thanks to Gemma Davison’s double.

And Hayes told West London Sport the performance shows they have already learned from last season, where they finished as runners-up after losing away from home on the final day.

“This was a great team performance,” she said. “We proved we can come away from home and get the right result.

“We didn’t get enough results away from home last year to finish the league out.

“But here we coped with the conditions and it was important emotionally for the players for them to grind out a result – something we couldn’t do last season

“It’s massive progress. I have been saying throughout pre-season that this team is more determined. I challenged them to demonstrate that against a team who many people many have tipped for the title.

“I want us to be known as a tougher, grittier team this season and on today’s evidence you saw that.”

Chelsea Ladies versus Liverpool in the FA Women’s Super League takes place on Sunday 19 April at Wheatsheaf Park, Staines Town FC. Kick-off is at 2pm and tickets are currently available priced at £5 for adults and £3 for juniors/seniors.
