Chelsea beat Roma in Women’s Champions League

Chelsea Women stayed unbeaten in the Women’s Champions League after second-half goals from Ellie Carpenter and Kadeisha Buchanan gave them a 2-0 win over Roma at Plough Lane.

Carpenter, introduced at half-time, broke the deadlock in the 51st minute after combining with Wieke Kaptein, with her shot taking a deflection on its way in.

Buchanan sealed the win a minute from time, heading in Kaptein’s cross.

Sonia Bompastor’s side had been wasteful in the first half, and Lauren James and Alyssa Thompson were replaced at the break by Carpenter and Sjoeke Nusken.

Nusken and fellow substitute Melvine Malard both missed good chances to add to the lead before Buchanan’s late header.

The victory, Chelsea’s third clean sheet in the league phase, took them to the top of the table, at least until the rest of the round is completed.

The Blues’ remaining league-phase games are against Hacken, Paris Saint-Germain and Leuven.
