Watkins scores hat-trick in Brentford victory

Barnsley 1 Brentford 3

Ollie Watkins scored a hat-trick as Brentford came from behind to win in fine style.

They went behind in the opening minute after former Fulham striker Cauley Woodrow found the net with a superb long-range strike.

But the visitors responded emphatically, with Watkins’ three headers taking his goal tally for the season to seven – making him the Championship’s top scorer.

He equalised by heading home a cross from Mathias Jensen following nice work by the excellent Said Benrahma.

Brentford should have been ahead by half-time but Barnsley had an incredible let-off when Watkins fired against the post, got to loose ball and shot against the bar, and Benrahma blasted his follow-up wide of the target.

But the Bees did take the lead shortly after the interval.

Keeper Bradley Collins, who was recently released by Chelsea, misjudged Sergi Canos’ right-wing cross and Watkins drifted in behind him to score from virtually underneath the crossbar.

And Watkins completed his hat-trick midway through the second half by heading in another Canos cross.
