Liverpool boss Slot praises Brentford
Arne Slot praised Brentford for their performance after his dominant Liverpool side left it late to clinch a 2-0 win against the Bees.
Substitute Darwin Nunez killed off admirable resistance from the home team, with the Uruguayan netting both goals just when it appeared that Brentford had done enough to secure a hard-fought point.
“I am pretty sure Brentford have never faced 37 shots against them this season, but they were more of a threat in the counter-attack,” said Reds boss Slot.
“You have to give a lot of credit to Brentford as I saw them in midweek (against Manchester City) and was very impressed.
“If I was the manager of Brentford I would have thought of moments where we could have won the game, but we defended well and one of the reasons why we are so high in the league table is because we have good centre-backs.”
After Liverpool’s recent dropped league points against Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, and a Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg defeat at Tottenham, Slot was pleased with team’s efforts overall against the industrious Bees.
He added: “We missed a lot of chances against Tottenham and Forest but the players proved me wrong again.
“He (Nunez) is having a good season and scores goals, assists and works hard. But he is in competition with a lot of good players. I am very happy with him and not just because he scored the two goals.
“How many teams play against Brentford with 37 shots on goal? We are in an industry where it is about winning or losing and not about beautiful football.
“If you look at the amount of chances created, nothing has changed with us since the start of the season. But at this moment in time it is harder to convert.”
Despite the home defeat, Brentford – who drew 2-2 against Manchester City in midweek – remain in 11th place in the league table. Next up for Thomas Frank’s side is an away fixture at Crystal Palace on 26 January.
