Saunders struggling after injury setback

Brentford are unsure when Sam Saunders will be able to return from an ongoing knee problem.

The playmaker suffered a setback in his recovery during the Bees’ pre-season training camp in Florida.

Saunders has not played since January and underwent exploratory surgery in February.

The operation was regarded as a success but Saunders has since been troubled by persistent swelling and the cause is unknown.

He told West London Sport: “It’s frustrating because scans have come back clear and been positive.

“I’m optimistic because, for someone who turns 31 next week, my knees look to be in good condition.

“I want to realise my dream of playing in the Championship and I’m determined to get back as quickly as possible to do that.

“The manager and everyone at the club have been great and they’re doing all they can to get me back fit.”
