Smith defiant after Brentford defeat

Dean Smith was disappointed with Brentford’s opening-day defeat at Sheffield United but insisted his side are better than they were a year ago.

The Bees lost to Huddersfield in their first game of last season and this time fell down to Billy Sharpe’s goal in a 1-0 loss at Bramall Lane.

“It’s a disappointing result but not what our performance deserved,” Smith said.

“I thought it was a nothing game in the first half. There was not much goalmouth action for both sides and we’ve conceded a fortunate goal. Sharpe has one chance and scores – and that’s what he does.

“Sheffield United are a good organised side and went man-for-man in midfield, and we expected that. But we had some really good chances in the second half that we just didn’t take.

“We had some balls into the box. We hit the bar and missed two headers. Jota put one wide which he normally takes and Lasse nearly got on the end of a couple.

“I’m not too despondent because I look back to the Huddersfield game last year and we’re a much better team.

“The new signings did okay and it was an okay performance from us, and we have to give credit to the opposition today.”
