Man City end Brentford’s Carabao Cup run
Man City 2Cherki (32′)
Savinho (67′)
Brentford 0
Brentford were unable to defy the odds at the Etihad Stadium and bowed out of the Carabao Cup.
Manchester City were strong favourites and secured a semi-final place with goals from Rayan Cherki and Savinho, whose deflected strike summed up a frustrating night for the Bees.
Cherki put the hosts ahead with a thumping shot into the top corner shortly after the half-hour mark.
The goal came after City seemed fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men when Abdukodir Khusanov stayed on the pitch despite a foul on Kevin Schade, who would have been through on goal.
Brentford, without top scorer Igor Thiago and with Schade operating as a centre-forward, battled hard and defended well, but rarely troubled City.
And any real hope of a Bees comeback was quashed when the unfortunate Kristoffer Ajer tried to block Savinho’s shot from the left-hand side of the penalty area but inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net.
Brentford: Valdimarsson, Van den Berg, Ajer, Collins, Henry (Lewis-Potter 76), Kayode (Hickey 76), Jensen (Donovan 81), Yarmoliuk (Konak 88), Damsgaard, Janelt, Schade (Nunes 88).
Subs not used: Kelleher, Pinnock, Peart-Harris, Arthur.
