Late goal gives nine-man Bees a point

Sheffield United 2 Brentford 2

Bradley Wright-Phillips netted another dramatic late goal, with his last-minute equaliser rescuing a point for nine-man Brentford in an action-packed game at Bramall Lane.

They went ahead through Marcello Trotta’s penalty before being reduced to 10 men after Tony Craig was red-carded following a clash with Dave Kitson.

The resulting penalty was missed by Tony McMahon but Sheffield United did eventually score from the spot just after the hour mark, substitute Barry Robson converting following Lee Dodson’s handball.

United went ahead five minutes later, Kitson heading home Jamie Murphy’s cross, but were themselves reduced to 10 when Harry Maguire was sent off after fouling Clayton Donaldson in the area.

That gave the visitors a penalty but Sam Saunders was denied by George Long’s fine save, and worse followed for Brentford when Donaldson was shown a second yellow card following a 77th-minute foul on Kevin McDonald.

Yet, incredibly, Uwe Rosler’s side – who scored twice late on to come from behind and beat Portsmouth on Saturday – still managed to find a goal to take them to within a point of second-placed Bournemouth with two matches remaining.

Club captain Kevin O’Connor, back from injury, found fellow substitute Wright-Phillips and the on-loan striker raced through to level.

Brentford: Moore; Logan, Dean, Craig, Bidwell; Diagouraga, Reeves; Hodson (O’Connor 66), Forshaw (Saunders 67), Donaldson; Trotta (Wright-Phillips 73).
Subs not used: Gounet, Dallas, Forrester, El Alagui.
