O’Connell frustrated by lack of first-team action

Brentford centre-back Jack O’Connell admits he has been frustrated by his lack of first-team football.

The 22-year-old made 18 appearances last season and, with the Bees keen to sign a central defender during the summer, he could be pushed further down the pecking order.

“It’s been frustrating. I want to play football. I don’t enjoy sitting on the bench,” O’Connell said.

“To be fair, Yoann [Barbet] has done well since he came in. There’s healthy competition and we push each other every day in training.

“But I want to play myself, obviously. It’s up to me to get my place. I’ve just got to keep working hard and have a good pre-season.”

  • I can understand his disappointment. The few times I've seen him play he's been competent and moves the ball well, arguably better than Dean and Tarkowski. Perhaps his positioning isn't as good at the moment, but i would put that down to a lack of a run in the side. He should be played or loaned out to a decent League1 or even championship side because i think he's good enough
