Andrews bemoans ’12 minutes of madness’ after Brentford cup exit

Keith Andrews said Brentford were undone by “12 minutes of madness” as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at Sunderland.

The Bees lost 3-2 in the fourth round at the Stadium of Light, having fallen three goals behind in a 12-minute spell in the first half.

Brentford had started well, hitting the post and the bar and having an effort cleared off the line, but Chemsdine Talbi, Timur Tutierov and Malick Fofana struck between the 26th and 39th minutes, with Jocelin Ta Bi setting up all three goals.

Callum Wilson pulled one back just before half-time and Igor Thiago scored in stoppage time, but Brentford, who made eight changes after Saturday’s draw with Hull, could not find an equaliser.

And boss Andrews said: “It was a crazy game, but we have to look at ourselves and how we conceded those goals. You cannot describe those 12 minutes of madness.

“I had full faith in the team but unfortunately those minutes have cost us.

“We can’t concede goals like that in a short space of time, defend like that and expect a good outcome.”

Andrews insisted Brentford had taken the competition seriously.

“We were very ambitious in this competition, to go as far as we could,” he said.
