First home defeat for Bees boss

Brentford 0 Tranmere 2

Having made such an encouraging start to the season, Brentford were brought down to earth by a surprise home defeat.

Uwe Rosler’s side had much of the possession, but Tranmere took their chances and condemned the German to his first loss at Griffin Park, with goals from Robbie Weir and Andy Robinson.

Weir struck first, heading home the impressive Robinson’s 29th-minute cross.

Rovers’ lead was preserved when goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams denied Clayton Donaldson after a mistake by defender Mark McChrystal had left the Bees striker through on goal.

Gary Alexander came desperately close to equalising with a volley that struck the bar, and had that gone in Brentford may well have gone on to win the game.

But they were unable to find that all-important goal and were hit with a sucker punch when Robinson’s superb 25-yarder flew past keeper Richard Lee.

It was a killer blow for Brentford, who were thwarted again by a late double-save from Fon Williams, who did brilliantly to stop Donaldson’s shot and then kept out Alexander’s follow-up.
