Bees bounce back by beating Coventry

Coventry City 0 Brentford 2

Clayton Donaldson and Martin Taylor scored as Brentford returned to winning ways in fine style.

The Bees, who have endured a patchy beginning to the season, overcame a difficult start against a strong Coventry side but took control after a defensive mix-up gifted Donaldson his fourth goal of the campaign.

And Sam Saunders made a point to manager Uwe Rosler by creating the all-important second goal soon after coming on as a substitute midway through the second half.

Saunders, unhappy at not being able to secure a regular starting place, served up an excellent delivery for Taylor to nod home.

It was Coventry’s first defeat at their temporary home of Northampton’s Sixfields ground – and Brentford’s first away win against the Sky Blues since 1932.

Coming against a team that has scored 22 times so far this season, it was a perfect response to the recent derby defeat at the hands of Leyton Orient.

Donaldson struck on 22 minutes, pouncing on a mistake by defender Cyrus Christie and lifting the ball over keeper Joe Murphy from seven yards.

The goal came against the run of play as Coventry had dominated the opening stages, with Leon Clarke missing their best chance.

But after going ahead, Brentford were galvanised and missed several chances to score a second before Taylor netted.

Will Grigg was unable to hit the target after being found by Donaldson and Alan McCormack fired wide as the visitors finished the half strongly.

And Donaldson – a constant threat to the City defence – then had an effort saved by Murphy.

Donaldson caused more problems after the break, crossing for Grigg, who was again unable to finish, and having another shot stopped by Murphy.

Brentford continued press and Martin Fillo missed their next chance before Murphy produced another save, this time keeping out Adam Forshaw’s drive.

But Murphy was powerless to stop centre-back Taylor scoring his second goal in three appearances since arriving on loan.

Substitute Farid El Alagui was unlucky not to add a late third when he was denied by Christie’s goal-line clearance.

Brentford: Lee, Logan, Dean, Taylor, Craig, Forshaw, McCormack (Reeves 85), Diagouraga, Fillo (Saunders 64), Donaldson, Grigg (El Alagui 73).
Subs not used: O’Brien, O’Connor, Teixeira, Trotta.
