Cook’s late strike denies 10-man Bees

Brentford 2 Leyton Orient 2

Ex-QPR star Lee Cook scored a late goal to earn his side a point at Brentford, who had Jake Bidwell sent off.

Bidwell will miss Sunday’s FA Cup fourth-round clash with Chelsea through suspension after he was dismissed in the 57th minute for a second bookable offence.

Former Brentford midfielder Martin Rowlands mocked the home fans after putting Orient ahead with a thunderous 35th-yard free-kick, but strikers Paul Hayes and Clayton Donaldson gave Uwe Rosler’s team a half-time lead.

After Bidwell was given his marching orders, Simon Moore saved a penalty from David Mooney but could do nothing to stop Cook’s 86th-minute drive.

Rowlands, unpopular among the Griffin Park faithful because of the manner of his departure for neighbours QPR in 2003, further antagonised them with his reaction to scoring.

Brentford responded strongly, with Hayes and Donaldson both poking home inside the six-yard box.

But they were dealt a big blow when Bidwell received his second yellow card following a foul on Jimmy Smith.

Lee Hodson brought down former Bees striker Charlie MacDonald with 20 minutes remaining but Moore was equal to Mooney’s spot-kick.

However, Cook’s 25-yarder was beyond the young goalkeeper’s reach.

Brentford (4-4-2): Moore; Hodson, Craig, Dean, Bidwell; Forshaw, Douglas, Adeyemi (Barron 62), Saunders (Diagouraga 75); Donaldson, Hayes (Logan 68).
Subs not used: Lee, Trotta, Logan, Forrester, Kiernan
