Brentford were ruthlessly punished for missing first-half chances.

They caused Manchester United major problems before goals from Anthony Elanga, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.

Ivan Toney netted a late consolation for the Bees, who remain 14th in the Premier League table – 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Brentford’s display underlined why they are widely expected to stay up this season by bookmakers such as
Olybet Sports, which is widely popular for football betting in Europe.

Mathias Jensen was twice denied by United keeper David de Gea in the first half and Mads Bech Sorensen had a glorious chance but his shot was deflected into the side netting.

United were much improved after the interval and went close to scoring when Cristiano Ronaldo’s looping header hit the top of the bar.

Two goals in the space of seven minutes then put the visitors in control.

Fred clipped the ball towards Elanga, who did well to control and then nod past keeper Jonas Lossl, who was selected in place of Alvaro Fernandez.

Worse followed for the Bees when Ronaldo chested the ball off to Bruno Fernandes, who teed up Greenwood for a simple tap-in.

Fernandes was also involved in the third goal, collecting Scott McTominay’s pass and playing in Rashford, who fired into the roof of the net.

Toney poked in from close range after United failed to clear Sorensen’s long throw.
