Brentford secure away point against Wigan

Wigan 0 Brentford 0

Brentford earned a battling point in a game of few chances at the DW Stadium.

The Bees dominated possession but only managed one shot on target throughout, while Luke Daniels was slightly the busier of the two keepers.

Brentford began brightly and Neal Maupay was off target with an early strike on goal after a slick one-two with Said Benrahma.

But despite some promising approach play there were few scares for the home side, who defended resolutely and managed to block several attempts on goal during the first half.

Wigan’s best chance of the opening period fell to the excellent on-loan Chelsea midfielder Reece James, whose rasping shot was superbly saved by Daniels.

The Bees number one made another fine soon after the interval, this time denying Gavin Massey when the midfielder was one-on-one.

Ollie Watkins then saw Brentford’s only shot on target well saved by Christian Walton, but it was the hosts who finished the stronger

Daniels was once again called into action to keep out a low strike by James, Joe Garner had a header ruled out for the Latics and a late scare saw Cheyenne Dunkley’s header come back of the bar when a free-kick was launched into the Bees box.

The Bees remain in 13th place, 14 points clear of the relegation zone but nine points adrift of the top six.
