Brentford keeper Valdimarsson signs new contract

Brentford goalkeeper Hákon Valdimarsson has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The 24-year-old Iceland international has extended his stay with the Bees until the summer of 2030, with the club holding an option to extend the deal by a further two years.

Valdimarsson joined Brentford from Swedish side IF Elfsborg in January 2024 and has since established himself as a key member of the first-team squad under head coach Keith Andrews.

“I’m delighted Hákon is signing a new deal,” Andrews told the club website.

“He’s a very liked individual, he’s got some very close connections within the club, he’s an outstanding goalkeeper—we’ve seen that when he’s played this season—and we’re really happy that he’s signed a new deal.”

Valdimarsson began his career as an outfield player in Iceland before transitioning to goalkeeping in 2017.

He rose through the divisions in his homeland with Grotta before moving to Elfsborg, where he was named Goalkeeper of the Year in the Swedish top flight.

Andrews added: “Hákon is a big part of the fabric of this football club and he understands it.

“People maybe don’t recognise what goes on behind the scenes, and the importance of some of the players who are part of this journey.”
