Bees lose at Sunderland in Carabao Cup
Brentford were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after losing 3-2 to Sunderland in the fourth round at the Stadium of Light, where Malick Fofana scored the decisive goal.
The Bees conceded three times in 13 first-half minutes, as Chemsdine Talbi, Timur Tutierov and Fofana scored between the 26th and 39th minutes, with Jocelin Ta Bi setting up all three.
Callum Wilson pulled one back just before half-time and Igor Thiago turned in Mathias Jensen’s effort in stoppage time, but it was too late for Keith Andrews’ side.
Brentford, who made eight changes after Saturday’s draw with Hull, had been the better side before falling behind, with Jannik Schuster hitting the bar and Michael Kayode striking the post in a goalmouth scramble.
Talbi opened the scoring by tapping in on the line after Hakon Valdimarsson had saved Ta Bi’s low shot, and Tutierov added a second three minutes later from Ta Bi’s cut-back.
Fofana then headed in Ta Bi’s cross at the far post before Wilson bundled in from close range.
