Bees need penalties to overcome Newport

Newport 1 Brentford 1

Brentford won 3-0 on penalties

Brentford survived a scare to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup – after keeper Ellery Balcombe saved all of Newport’s penalties in a shootout.

Mathias Jensen’s late goal looked like taking the Bees through.

They struggled to create clear-cut chances before finally breaking the deadlock with three minutes remaining.

Boss Thomas Frank made changes in the second half – and three of his substitutes combined for the opening goal.

Aaron Hickey did superbly near the far post to hook Bryan Mbeuno’s cross towards Jensen, who applied the finish from close range.

However, after six minutes of stoppage time Kiban Rai headed in Adam Lewis’ cross to equalise for the League Two side.

In the shootout, Balcombe saved from Lewis, Nathan Wood and Bryn Morris, with Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa converting their spot-kicks before Keane Lewis-Potter tucked away the winning penalty.

Brentford: Balcombe, Roerslev, Mee (Hickey 77), Zanka, Ajer, Onyeka (Jensen 62), Janelt, Yarmolyuk (Brierley 78), Lewis-Potter, Schade (Mbeumo 62), Olakigbe (Wissa 62).
