Andrews pleased with substitutes’ impact in Bees draw

Keith Andrews was pleased with the impact of his substitutes during Brentford’s 1-1 draw at Hull.

The Bees fell behind to an Oli McBurnie penalty after Aaron Hickey brought down Tim Iroegbunam, who had nipped in to win a short pass from goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Andrews sent on Mikkel Damsgaard and Jaidon Anthony for Hickey and Kevin Schade just after the hour, and Brentford were level a minute later.

The two substitutes combined down the flank and Anthony’s cross caused problems in the Hull box before Igor Thiago helped the ball on for Dango Ouattara to score from close range.

Anthony later had a header saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis and also fired narrowly wide.

And the Bees boss said: “We’ve got very good players and good players on the bench and I think it’s important that when they come on they realise that they have to impact the game.

“It’s nice today that they had that impact.”

But Andrews admitted Brentford were not at their best for long spells at the MKM Stadium.

“We prepared for this game as diligently as we did for Liverpool or Aston Villa,” he said. “We knew it was coming, but I don’t think we dealt with it as well as we could have at times.

“We were not as aggressive on occasions with our defending as we usually are. At times we lacked a bit of cohesion.”
