Edwards ‘100%’ but new QPR signing Obikwu is nursing an injury
Ronnie Edwards is “100%” and in contention to start for QPR against Coventry on Saturday, but recent signing Justin Obikwu is nursing a minor injury.
Edwards has not featured since his £4.5m transfer from Southampton as he has been building up his fitness, having not been involved for the Saints prior to his move.
But R’s head coach Julien Stephan, who will be without the suspended Amadou Mbengue against the Championship leaders, indicated on Wednesday afternoon that he is ready to bring Edwards into the side.
However, Obikwu’s planned debut against his former club could be scuppered by a knock he has picked up in training. The striker will be assessed on Friday.
“It’s just a little issue – a little problem. I don’t think it will be long,” Stephan explained.
“(I will) Stay connected with the medical staff and they will give us all the advice and information to know if he is available for the next game.”
Koki Saito and Esquendinha are expected to be passed fit following their recent injuries.
Edwards is a hugely popular figure among Rangers supporters, having impressed while on loan during the second half of last season.
His inclusion would be a timely morale booster for the home fans following last weekend’s dramatic defeat against Wrexham.
“Ronnie now, with a full week (of training) is 100%, so no problem for him,” said Stephan.
Stephan said he also believes Ilias Chair might take part in training next week following his injury lay-off.
