QPR boss backs Lumley after signing of keeper Kelly

Mark Warburton has hailed Liam Kelly after the goalkeeper completed his move to QPR – but the manager also had praise for Joe Lumley.

The R’s have brought Kelly in to compete with Lumley and plan to offload Matt Ingram this summer.



Kelly, 23, previously played at Glasgow Rangers under Warburton, who has acknowledged that Lumley “did exceptionally well” last season.

Warburton told QPR’s website: “Liam is outstanding with his feet, he has great distribution and he is a very good shot stopper.

“Joe Lumley did exceptionally well for QPR last season so Liam’s job is to come here and compete. That’s what you want, you want competition all over the park.

“You have 24 or 25 competitive animals who are all keen to do well. You have to have that respectful competition for places.

“Liam will want that number one shirt, and Joe’s job will be to keep it and show what he can do.”

Kelly has been joined at Loftus Road by left-back Lee Wallace, who was recently released by Glasgow Rangers – he too played under Warburton at Ibrox.
