Fly-half Swiel to rejoin Quins next season

Harlequins will sign fly-half Tim Swiel on a permanent deal from South African side the Sharks in the summer.

The 21-year-old spent four months on loan at the Stoop earlier this season, playing 10 times as cover for the injured Ben Botica.

Swiel was born in Taunton but until his time with Quins had spent his entire rugby career in South Africa.

Quins director of rugby Conor O’Shea said: “Tim made a real impact in incredibly trying circumstances earlier in the season and we are delighted that the Sharks have granted him his release to come back to us on a full-time basis.

“He is a young player with a huge amount of potential and also someone who showed mentally that he is able to cope with anything thrown at him.

“We are all looking forward to getting him back here and working with him from next season.”

Swiel added: “The decision wasn’t a tricky one due to the fact I had such a great time on my loan spell.

“The Harlequins set-up and supporter base is amazing and I can’t wait to wear the quarters again.

“Quins have very good young players coming through which bodes well for the future and I’m grateful to hopefully be part of that legacy.”
