QPR beat Sunderland to end away drought

Sunderland 0 QPR 2

Leroy Fer and Bobby Zamora scored as QPR emphatically secured their first away points of the season and moved out of the relegation zone.

Matt Phillips set up both first-half goals, crossing from the right for Fer to head in the opener on 17 minutes and then for Zamora to superbly volley home just before the interval.

A second-half injury to Fer, who was stretchered off with 15 minutes remaining, was the only negative on a great night for Rangers in their first away game since the end of Harry Redknapp’s reign as manager.

Without injured top scorer Charlie Austin, and having been beaten in all 12 of their previous away matches, they were outstanding in the first half.

Having put them ahead, Fer was desperately unlucky not to score again when his shot struck the inside of the post.

Sunderland eventually began to assert themselves and Jermain Defoe shot wide before Rangers keeper Rob Green produced a brilliant save to push Connor Wickham’s header on to the bar.

Caretaker boss Chris Ramsey’s side had to withstand some second-half pressure after Zamora had doubled their lead in the final moments of the first period.

And Green pulled off another great save, this time turning away a shot from substitute Ricky Alvarez.
