Chelsea assessing Drogba ankle injury

Chelsea hope Didier Drogba shakes off an ankle problem in time to be available for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with German side Schalke.

The veteran striker picked up the injury in training and sat out Saturday’s 4-2 victory at home to Swansea.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho said: “Let’s see if Drogba can recover. He had a problem with his ankle and was ruled out of the game because of that.”

And Mourinho has warned that his side cannot afford to be complacent in a group which also includes Sporting Lisbon.

“The group is more difficult than people think,” he insisted.

“It’s not because I’m Portuguese, but Portuguese teams are always very difficult. Their league is not a strong league but the three top teams are very strong – very good.

“You go through Chelsea history and you see that when Chelsea played against Benfica and against Porto it was very difficult – and when we play Sporting in a couple of weeks it will be difficult.

“The Germans are the Germans, and Schalke have improved a lot. Our group is hard.”
