Injury setback delays Long’s return

On-loan Everton striker Chris Long has suffered a fresh injury setback but should be available for Brentford’s penultimate game of the season, according to Bees boss Mark Warburton.

The 20-year-old returned to his parent club for treatment on an existing problem and sustained a gash in a subsequent match for Everton’s Under-21s so missed Brentford’s draw with Bolton on Saturday.

Warburton said: “He would have played against Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday but he got a quad injury so they called him back to check him.

“He did a fitness test and then played in an Under-21s game. He’s their player so we have no control over that. They can call him back and it hurts but that’s the risk you run with loan players.

“He was due to come back on Thursday night, train on Friday and be on the bench, but he got a slight gash and he’ll be out for five to seven days.

“Hopefully we’ll get him back for next week and he’ll be available for Reading.”
